Blogging Handout

Reflection Blogs: This assignment allows students to think about the readings and discussions that the class has completed over the previous week.  Students are expected to go beyond merely summarizing what was read and discussed.  Instead, they are to engage the subject and relate to their own worldview/experiences. NOTE: Links, images, or sounds are acceptable, but not required.

Fieldwork:  On the days in which students conduct “shopping fieldwork,” they need to include a 1-2 page essay describing that experience under a separate heading in their reflection blogs.  These blogs need to include the following information to receive full credit:

  • Name of location
  • Time and date
  • Weather conditions
  • Description of shoppers and shopping patterns
  • Description of stores and selling patterns
  • Description of merchandise
  • Your connection/disconnection with this location
  •  Anything unusual

Deadlines: All reflections, including fieldwork, will be due on the following Monday morning by 8:00AM to receive full credit.  Reflections blogs will be marked down a partial letter grade for each day it is late, including weekends.

Grade Breakdown:

  • Depth of analysis or insight
  • Organization and clarity
  • Grammar and usage

Shopping Blogs: This project will help students think about how the desire to consume is produced and give them an opportunity to produce that desire on the Internet.  To do this, Students will post commodities (e.g. clothing, food, housewares, books, music, etc.) that they have found to be personally interesting to the class’s shopping blog.  Posts need to tell the reader the following:

  • Where they can obtain the object
  • How much it costs
  • Any important information from the retailer
  • An explanation as to why he/she has chosen to post this particular item
  • Why others might be interested in it

Deadlines: All shopping posts will be due Friday mornings by 8:00AM (with the exception of Monday, November, 24) on the days that we will review blog posts in class (see class schedule for particular dates). Shopping blogs will be marked down a partial letter grade for each day it is late, including weekends.

Grade Breakdown:

  • Creativity of post
  • Inclusion of links and images
  • Organization and clarity
  • Grammar and usage

Note on Grading: 50% of a student’s grade will be based on whether he/she has posted his blog on time.  The other 50% will be based on the student’s incorporation of comments from his/her peers and any other edits/revisions.  All edits/revisions are due by the last day of class (Wednesday, December 3).
