Fiske Reflection

I found this article to be very interesting and made me think about things in a different way after reading it. He starts out by using a metaphor that shopping is like a religion for people with the commodities being icons of worship and the exchanging of money being the Holy Communion which I thought was a very interesting way too put it.  He then goes on to say shopping is a very gendered experience. The ads are geared towards women and women are the ones shopping primarily, because they think of it as a way to escape the patriarchal dynamics of society. It’s the one place women go to where they aren’t controlled by men. While obviously this isn’t true for all women and now society has shifted slightly so that women are slightly more equal footing with men, in most aspects it’s still true.
