John Fiske: Shopping For Pleasure

Published by at 7:59 pm under Reflection Blog

Fiske describes a cycle within capitalism in which people are denied autonomous control over their own lives, and fill the need for control by shopping. Fiske’s shoppers are primarily women in a patriarchal society. The malls are rare public spaces they are able to freely and safely explore. The consumer is described as holding the power in the retail relationship, and therefore “subordinated peoples” find security in the individualism capitalism offers.
