Shopping for Pleasure

In “Shopping for Pleasure: Malls, Power, and Resistance,” John Fiske explores why people shop even when they may or may not have the means necessary. It seems that everything in our world is available in some form for consumption, making shopping hard to avoid. Fiske points to research that “80 percent of unemployed young people visited the mall at least once a week, and nearly 100 percent of young unemployed women were regular visitors” (308) In other words, shopping today is more of a hobby or pastime than a way of acquiring goods.
