Satisfaction Guaranteed

I enjoyed Susan Strasser’s in-depth look at the history of consumerism. The first half of “Satisfaction Guaranteed” discusses the beginnings of consumer culture in the United States. Prior to the early 20th century, items had been unbranded, but as more and more people began to purchase items made in factories, branding, Strasser says, “came to represent…the new networks and systems of production and distribution” (Strasser 15). I saw her first chapter as a closer look at how people went from buying things and truly being interested in the people who made it, to acquiring things just for the sake of having it.
