Susan Strasser: Satisfaction Guaranteed

Published by at 9:23 pm under Reflection Blog

In the first half of her book, Strasser addresses the history of branding, marketing, mass production, sales and the market itself in America. Under branding and marketing, she also discusses labeling and packaging. She distinguishes between customers and consumers early in her text. Every claim is backed up with an example, and often an image of the associated advertisement or product. As an historical account, her focus is on mass production practices from the time they emerged at the end of the nineteenth century through the early twentieth century. I think one of the most interesting observations Strasser makes is about the “creation” of markets, as described in Chapter 5.
